Giant Swing

Giant Swing

The Giant Swing, locally known as “Sao Chingcha,” is one of Bangkok’s most prominent cultural landmarks with its pair of gigantic red wooden pillars standing 21.15 meters tall. The tops are connected by an intricately carved wooden crossbar. The swing was used in a royal Brahmin ceremony to welcome Lord Shiva’s ascension to the Earth. Formerly, the area that the Giant Swing is situated in was considered as the “city pillar” or center of the capital city. Today the old town has become a valuable sightseeing spot with its historical buildings, Buddhist and Brahmin sites, and traditional communities. The Giant Swing and its surrounding historic urban landscape make this area one of the most beloved places for local and foreign visitors.
